It has just been announced that LeBron James will win his second consecutive MVP award. It takes a lot to even be considered in the discussion for this award, but I feel the criteria for which this award is judge needs to change.
James is a great player. Probably the best player basketball has ever seen. He is definitely the MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER of the year and has been for the past two years.
However, I don't think he is the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER this year. That award should've been given to Kevin Durant. Not only did he prove to be an outstanding player by being the youngest player in NBA history to lead the league in scoring, but he took the Oklahoma City Thunder from a 27 win team last year to a 50 win team this year. Also, Durant did this in the tougher Western Conference.
Now that's VALUE.
The thing about the Cleveland Cavaliers is that even without James, the team would still make the playoffs in the Eastern Conference; at least as a seventh or eighth seed. Without Durant, the Thunder don't even sniff the playoffs.
James is definitely the best player in the league and the MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER in the game right now; but Durant is the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER in the game. He is valuable to the team, the franchise and the city. I wish the sportswriters who vote on this awards could distinguish between the best player and the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER.
