Man how time flies. It seems like yesterday Derek Jeter was named rookie of the year ,for an up-and-coming Yankee team, and showed a lot of promise and hope for the future. That was 1996.
Fifteen years, five world series championships, one world series MVP and an all-star MVP later, Jeter is one of the greatest Yankees of all-time.
Any person who has lived in this world for more than a day should now that when someone achieves a lot for a particular company, they usually reward that employee with no hesitation, as long as the person can still contribute positively to the business.
Well, the Yankees are procrastinating in giving Jeter a new contract. The organization has a policy that they don't conduct new contracts with players until their current contract is finished. I completely understand that policy and its a very good one.
However, this is Jeter's contract we are talking about. He shouldn't even have to go to the Yankees. The Yankees should go to him with a 3 year contract worth $60 million.
This man is, and has been, the face of the franchise, never been in any legal trouble and was one of the main reasons that the Yankees had a resurrection in the mid-90s.
Jeter will no doubt be a Yankee next year, but he is one of the few players in sports that deserve a special privilege from a rule intend for the average player.
