The Dallas Mavericks have been crowned NBA Champions and Dirk Nowitzki is the Finals MVP. I'm not a Mavericks fan and never have been, but everyone that didn't live in Florida was rooting for them to beat the Miami Heat, including me.
The players on the Mavericks team deserved a title more than anyone associated with the Heat. Nowitzki, Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Shawn Marion and Brendan Haywood all contributed to this title run, all in their 30s and were ring-less. It's rare, in the NBA, when a team wins a title and no one on the roster has ever won a title, especially with almost all their players in their early, mid or late 30s.
However, two standouts on the Mavericks are Nowitzki and Kidd. These are all-time great players and ring would solidify their hall-of-fame careers. With this ring, Nowitzki vaults up the list of greatest power forwards ever to play the game; he is behind only Tim Duncan and Karl Malone. Kidd was already one of the greatest point guards ever; but with this ring, he can only be behind Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas and John Stockton.
In this day and age of the NBA, where every team feels as though they need two or more superstars to win a title, it's good to see a team with only one superstar, a bunch of good role players and great defense win the title. I'm a fan of the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers and would have rather seen one of those teams win; but I couldn't think of any other team I would have rather seen win-it-all.
