Earlier this week, the Boston Bruins won the Stanley Cup. This led to every sports talk show or sports highlight show declaring Boston as the new Title Town of America. I had to find out why such a name would be bestowed upon a city like Boston.

With much dismay, I found out that in the last ten years (from 2001-2011) every professional sports team, within the four major sports, from Boston has won a championship. The New England Patriots have won three Superbowls, the Boston Red Sox have won two World Series, the Boston Celtics have won one NBA championship and the Bruins have now won the Stanley Cup. That's seven titles for one city in ten years.

Once I saw these facts, it made me think, "Has no other city won this many titles in the same time span or shorter?"

Now, I'm from New York City; so naturally, I hate every single team in Boston. It would bring me much joy if NYC had completed a feat such as this at some point during the modern era of sports. I couldn't see how it couldn't have been done. There are only 12 cities in America with a pro sports team in the four major sports; and New York City is the only one with multiple teams in all sports, so the odds were on my side.

Unfortunately, much like the New York Yankees in the 2004 ALCS, NYC lost to Boston. Although, of all the cities eligible, NYC is the next closest to accomplishing what Boston has just accomplished. In a 17 year span (from 1969-1986), NYC had won four World Series from the Yankees and the New York Mets, one NBA championship from the New York Knicks, one Superbowl from the New York Giants and four Stanley Cups from the New York Islanders.

The third closest city is Los Angeles, which is by sheer luck because they had the Raiders in their area for about ten years. From 1983-2007, Los Angeles won a title in every sport. That's a span of 24 years. Coming in a close fourth is Chicago with a span of 25 years (from 1985-2010).

What Boston has managed to do is incredible. Over the last ten years, it has dominated the professional sports world like no other city has ever dominated it. As much as I hate Boston, with every muscle fiber in my heart, I have to respect the city; and crown it Title Town of America.

Which city do you think will become the next Title Town?

  1. Your title made me think you were going to build a case against crowning Boston the new title city. Anyway it just further proves we can trust your reporting, considering what we know about your background and team preference.

FYI: "There are only 12 teams in America with a pro sports team in the four major sports"

I think you meant 12 *cities.

One thing about having an active commentariat is that typos dont last very long lol. Comes with the territory.
