I rarely watch award shows of any kind. I usually find them mundane, with bad performances, and unfunny commentary. However, when I found out Kevin Hart was hosting the 2011 BET Awards, I had to watch it and it didn't disappoint.
The 2011 BET Awards was hit and was the best award show I have seen in a long time. There was a lot of good to go around but also a lot of bad; and there are standouts on both sides.
WINNERS
The biggest winner of the night was Hart. He was one of the funniest host for an award show in recent memory. From the very beginning of the show, with the little girls who were just as tall as he was, to the middle of the show, with The Real Husbands of Hollywood(a show that needs to become an actual reality show) and to the end, when his alter rap ego Chocolate Droppa made his debut to the world; Hart kept everyone entertained.
Chris Brown was a winner on a number of different levels. He won the most awards of any artists including the biggest: Best Male R@B Artist. He had one of the best performances of the night and it would also seem like Brown has completely won back the public support after that 2009 fiasco with Rihanna.
Kelly Rowland performance made her a major winner. She was sexy, powerful and seductive. She really owned the stage and stepped out of Beyonce's shadow a little bit, which has hid her from the public for the last seven years. I'm not sure how her upcoming album, Here I Am, will compare to Beyonce's album, 4; but for that moment, Rowland made people forget about her former group-mate.
LOSERS
The biggest loser of the night had to be Tiffany Green. She was a nobody before last night, but now her name is synonymous is screw up. After she announced multiple winners for one award, which resulted in Drake accepting an award that was supposed to go to Brown, Twitter and Facebook blew up with jokes about her. The sad thing is the problem wasn't even her fault; but she will forever be blamed for it.
Another loser had to be Trey Songz. He won no awards and his performance was abysmal. While he has great songs and great albums, when it comes to singing live, he never does well. He cannot sing; and it showed with his voice cracking and going in-and-out of tune during the whole performance. At the beginning of the performance, Songz took his shirt; and I think he does to compensate for not being able to sing. At least he gives the people something to pay attention to, since his voice can't keep people hooked.
Beyonce rounds out the loser table. Her performance was the last of the night and I felt a little cheated. The advertisements for the show never said she was performing from England at another event. I was expecting to see her come flying down from the ceiling or something else extravagant. It might have been an historic moment for the BET Awards, but it was a disappointing moment for Beyonce and her fans. Also, her performmance didn't match up to Rowland's performance.
