It has been an interesting NFL off-season. The Washington Redskins have been contributing to the excitment this off-season. One of the most compelling stories would be Donovan McNabb being traded to the Redskins. However, that is not the end of the story. Even though McNabb hasn't been in Washington long enough to find a place to lay his head at night, he is already trying to find his way out of town. I say that because he has made a suggestion to management that could lead the Redskins to the playoffs or lead to McNabb's exit.
He has told management they should try to sign Terrel Owens... That's right Terrel Owens a.k.a T.O. a.k.a future hall-of-famer a.k.a team cancer.
For those who don't remember, McNabb and Owens were teammates on the Philadelphia Eagles in 2004. That same year, McNabb posted the best numbers of his career and Owens proved to the push to get them over the hump and take the Eagles to Superbowl for the first time in over 20 years.
However, after that year, the Eagles imploded, with Owens at the center of it, and the Eagles wouldn't return to a NFC Championship game for 3 years.
Now fast forward to now... The Redskins are a desperate team who wants to make the playoffs and is need of another wide receiver to take pressure off Santana Moss. The Redskins have already stocked pile a number of great players of yester-year including: Larry Johnson, Willie Parker and Phillip Buchanon. So why not add one more aging player who hasn't been a probowl player since Madden 06?
Because with Owens, not only is his age a factor but his immaturity and natural desire to be in the limelight will also hinder the team's overall performance. It has at every team he has played for, with the exception of last year with the Buffalo Bills (but no one pays attention to them anyway).
The Redskins are trying to turn over a new leaf and make strides for the better. They have done this well by hiring Bruce Allen as a general manager and Mike Shanahan as a head coach, who are proven winners. Now they have a quarterback in McNabb who can actually lead their team. If they sign Owens, it would be five steps back after taking one step forward.
